Today’s featured mansion and estate is special in many ways. This weekend the United States President, Barrack Obama, is meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders here. The estate, named Sunnylands, located in Rancho Mirage, California, is the former winter retreat of billionaire publisher, philanthropist, and diplomat, Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore. Mr. Annenberg founded a couple of noted publications, TV Guide and Seventeen magazine. He was also the United States Ambassador to The United Kingdom from 1969 to 1974.
Another reason this estate is special to us at Billionaire Addresses is that in 2007 while working at a limousine company in Rochester, MN, our founder had the opportunity to be the personal chauffeur to Mrs. Annenberg and her daughter Elizabeth Kabler while Mrs. Annenberg was a resident/patient at Mayo Clinics St Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Her stay lasted about 2 years as her health deteriorated. But during that time Mrs. Annenberg just couldn’t stop working and continued her philanthropy in the city of Rochester by paying for several changes to their downtown area which she thought would enhance the future of the city. One day while taking a walk with our founder and chauffeur Ken, Mrs. Annenberg said, “I think the area around this entrance to the clinic (Mayo) is to busy with cars and such and think a nice private garden and place to relax outdoors would be great for the Mayo Clinic”. The following month, the Annenberg Foundation announced a $35 million dollar donation to first, cover the cost of what was to become the Annenberg Plaza at Mayo Clinic, second to construct the Annenberg Pulmonary Medicine Center, to endow two Professorships in Pulmonary Medicine and two Career Development Awards in Pulmonary Medicine, and to fund a sculpture for the Annenberg Plaza. Though Mrs. Annenberg stayed on and off at the Mayo Clinic, her final days were spent down the road from their Rancho Mirage estate at the Eisenhower Medical Center, another location they had donated over $250 million dollars to. Leonore Annenberg really was a special and very giving human being.
